House of Wax review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:11 (A review of House of Wax)

One of my favourite Vincent Price films and it has a lot to do with the atmosphere of this movie. There is a lot of dark tone with the man creeping around at night all the time. It has a good moving storyline and the ending is good as well. Oddly, this movie is a remake of one that came out in 1933 called Mystery of the Wax Museum. A very cool thing in this movie that isn't related to the story at all is this man with two paddle balls that does some amazing tricks! They pretty much just added him in this film because it was in 3D and he hits the balls towards the screen a lot.

This is an off topic comment but if you have ever watched this movie and Darkman you will notice how similar the Darkman character is with the character Henry Jarrod in this movie. They have a good life, get burned, put on fake faces, and move around in the night with a dark cloak. I'm not saying it's a complete copy but I think Sam Raimi had some influence while watching this movie for his Darkman.

House On Haunted Hill review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:10 (A review of House On Haunted Hill )

A true classic in every way! This was one of the very first Vincent Price movies I viewed and it was on a whim while at a video store. Ever since then I became a hugh b-movie and classic horror fan. The whole idea is pretty original for its time and it's a short film but I like it like that because it doesn't need to be any longer and it keeps the pace moving good. All the acting is pretty top notch and Vincent does one hell of a job playing the mysterious playboy. He has some great lines in this film and I laugh every time he says them. Example; "Don't stay up thinking of ways to get rid of me, it makes wrinkles." Another great one is; "What husband hasn't, at some time, wanted to kill his wife?" I can think of a lot that haven't Mr. Loren. I want to rate this film a 5/5 but some of it is pretty corny. I will say that I have viewed this film far to many times to count and I love it dearly. If your going to start watch Vincent Price films, start with this one.

The Fly review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:10 (A review of The Fly)

A horror movie where Vincent Price doesn't play a bad guy! I won't bother telling you about the story because if you haven't heard how it goes then crawl out from under that rock and see this movie. I like this movie a lot but the plot is somewhat flawed. 1) I don't think squishing a head and an arm would get rid of the evidence. 2) Helene is yelling at a nurse to leave a fly alone when she is looking for a fly so she can kill it. What does it matter to her if the nurse goes around killing flies? 3) If the fly and Andrรฉ switched heads then how does Andrรฉ know who he is or knows how to type and write english. Stuff that doesn't make sense but this is a good movie and I love the boxset it came in. It's very well done and looks very b-movie and old school.
PS: The poor kittie that gets lost in the emptiness is so cute!!!

House of Usher review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:09 (A review of House of Usher)

This was the very first Vincent Price film I saw and I still love it now as much as I did then. I even had an artist draw me an excellent picture of Vincent from this movie that I've now framed on my wall. The idea behind being buried alive is in most of Poe's tales and I think this one is one of the best uses of that idea. All the acting is great by the supporting cast and the music is my favourite from any of the Price/ Poe films. This is the film that lifted Roger Corman's career and I still can't believe it was shot in just 15 days! I like this one better than some films that have been shot in 6 months! The story line is a bit different from the actually tale but it makes for better viewing I gather. Overall it is a great film to watch with the lights low. "I can hear the scratch of rat claws within the stone walls."

The Tingler review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:09 (A review of The Tingler)

Yeah, the ultimate gag movie. FILMED IN PERCEPTO! Technically that doesn't even exsist but William Castle was great at selling his movies with new ideas and this movie was a classic for it. Seats would buzz during certain scenes and sometimes a paid member would faint during the climax and a fake ambulance team would run in the theater to grab her out. The movie itself even has a moment when the "Tingler" gets loose in the theater and the movie goes all dark with the audience screaming and my guess is is that the audience watching the film during this probably did the same thing. The climax of this movie is very effective as it is all filmed in black & white except for the blood, and it actually got my heart rate up a bit when I first saw it and thought it was so damn cool. So many good one-liners that Vincent drops in on his cheating wife too...lol. The movie itself even has a moment when the "Tingler" gets lose in the theater and the movie goes all dark with the audience screaming and my guess is is that the audience watching the film during this probably did the same thing. This movie also contains a cool fact. It was the first movie to have displayed someone taking LSD, which was Vincent Price played as Dr. Warren Chapin. One of those movies where I wish I was able to watch when it first came out on the big screen and it will always be a favourite of mine.

The Pit and the Pendulum review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:08 (A review of The Pit and the Pendulum)

Tagline: "The greatest terror tale ever told!"
Directed by: Roger Corman
Released: August 12, 1961
Actors: Vincent Price, John Kerr, Barbara Steele
Genre: Horror
Descriptors: Colour
Length: 80 minutes
First Line: "Who are you?"
Last Line: "Ahhhhhhhhhh!"

The best Price/ Poe film that features the scream queen Barbara Steele! To me, I find absolutely nothing wrong with this movie and the only negative I can even really think of is the character of Francis can come off as a bit annoying at times, but he kind of has to be. Francis comes to the Medina castle to investigate why his sister suddenly died. He has been told different stories and doesn't know what to believe. However, Nicholas is still haunted by his wifes death and the death of his mother and that haunting soon becomes a reality when strange things begin to occur. Did his wife die prematurely or is she still alive haunting her poor husband? I won't spoil the rest of the story because the climax is the best one out of all the Price/ Poe films! It still sends chills up my spine sometimes, and I remember the first time I saw it I was actually scared, which doesn't happen often.

The music is brilliant in this film and Vincent Price does an excellent job playing two roles, one evil and one good. The opening with the oozing coloured oil effect is great and the ending is just as good. I recommend this be the first Price film you see because you'll be hooked from then on.

The Haunted Palace review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 01:07 (A review of The Haunted Palace)

This is one of my favourite Vincent Price films and I think a lot of it has to do with that fact that it's a combination of two stories by Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. Joseph Curwen is a Worlock whom is experimenting with raising the dead at his palace and trying to create a super human race by taking peoples souls, mainly woman. The town of Arkham doesn't like this and soon burns Joseph Curwen alive. Joseph places a curse on the town and 110 years later his great-great grandson, Charles Dexter Ward, returns to the town to collect the deed on the very same palace. The towns people believe Joseph Curwen has come back and soon Charles is changing after the very first night in his new home. Joseph Curwen is trying to get into his body to come back from the dead and continue his experiments and take his revenge on the towns people. But it doesn't go as planned...

There's so much to like about this movie. The music is great, the acting is awesome, Debra Paget is hot, and the set of the palace is beautiful! Personally I think this is Vincent's best performance. The movie does run a bit slow near the end but I love it none the less. Some of Vincent's best lines are in this movie. There's a sceen where he is entering his wife's room and she asks what he is doing and he says; "Merely exercising my husbandly prerogative." Haha, brilliant! This was my 2nd Vincent Price film I saw and it got me hooked from then on.

Time Out review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 12:16 (A review of Time Out)

A masterpiece classic. Take Five went on to be one of the most popular tracks during the early 60's and gave this quartet a chance to tour the World based off this track alone. In the liner notes Dave states that it wasn't even suppose to be a hit, just a Joe Morello drum solo. Well, the solo is awesome but the track as a whole is brilliant and goes to show that some of the best works come out by accident. The fact that each track isn't in normal time signature isn't anything new but this Quartet perfected it. They would follow up with the less successful Time Further Out but if anyone wants an excellent example of great Cool Bop Jazz then look no further. Look at the review below. Even non-jazz fans loved it!

October Rust review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 10:43 (A review of October Rust)

This is my favourite album by this group and I think it will be until this group is finished. It's such a solid release and the only negative I can say about is the stupid Prologue and Epilogue. I also don't care to much for the track My Girlfriend's Girlfriend to much. Kinda lame with lame lyrics and filled with lameness all around. I have a bit of goth in me and this album is filled with gothness and the lyrics for most of the tracks all speak to me in a special way somehow. October is my favourite month as well so this has even more of a special place in my black heart. I remember buying this album because I heard the epic track Haunted on the The Blair Witch Project compilation and fell in love with it right away. I won't go into a track by track review but most of them on hear are pretty chill for metal, which is good for this type of music, and the guitar is perfect. I'm a hugh fan of synth and keyboards and there's lots of that in this album too. I would personally recommend this as a first album for this group to newcomers.

Crowning of Atlantis review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 30 December 2011 10:41 (A review of Crowning of Atlantis)

This is probably the "fluffiest" metal album I own and that's not a bad thing because I love the stuff. Mixing orchestra sounds with metal isn't for everyone but I was a fan of early goth rock so that's probably why I like it so much. This isn't a 5/5 album for me but there are some damn good tracks on here. I guess this was suppose to be an EP and I think if there were no cover songs I might have given this a 5/5 because those are the tracks I don't like as much. However, Seawinds is one damn awesome track! The live tracks are pretty good and I absolutely love the song To Mega Therion so I had to buy Theli.
