Journey to the Centre of Blah...

Posted : 11 years, 7 months ago on 6 September 2012 12:28 (A review of Journey to the Centre of the Earth)

This is my first J.V. read and I honestly was expecting a lot more from all the hype I've heard about this guy since, well, birth. My main problem is how useless of a travel guide Hans and the Professor Lidenbrock are. The Professor assumes that he can just walk through the Earth and appear on the other end. Maybe that was a new idea at the time of this novels release but he is also aware that from point A to point B is over 10,000 miles long, yet he only brings along enough food and water for a few days. What a moron!!! He basically takes his nephew to his death, who complains endless about the journey for the first half of the book btw. The group obviously don't die so in the end all it's good I guess, as it should be for a book like this. If I was 14 I would have loved this book for sure but sadly the ideas presented in this novel, even for its time, aren't that impressive to me. I will say that J.V. can write though. I will remember so much from this novel just from all the visual representation he brought forth.

When They Cry review

Posted : 11 years, 8 months ago on 4 August 2012 07:25 (A review of When They Cry)

I'm not really a hard core Anime person but I didn't mind this one. I found myself really enjoying the first two story arch's of the show but after that I started to loose interest. I don't think the plot is that interesting to carry into a bunch of differet story lines. Great idea to do so and I would watch the first few episodes again for sure.

Best of the Old Tracy Movies

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 7 July 2012 04:31 (A review of Dick Tracy vs. Cueball)

This was a pretty good little film noir short. I own a few of these Dick Tracy films and this one seems to be the best of the bunch. The characters are interesting and Cueball was a pretty cool bad guy and he gets it bad in the end...ouch!. I found a few things annoying about this movie and one of them was this random old man, Vitamin Flintheart. He's trying to add some laughs for the audience but he ends up sounding like an overacting moron that is a tad on the queer side. The only thing I did find funny was this racist Jessy James wannabe kid that doesn't like natives. Kind of funny to see how little racial tension there was in films back then. Overall it was ok and if I were to recommend an old Tracy movie this would be it.

More of the Same...

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 5 July 2012 04:52 (A review of At the Gate of Sethu)

It's pretty hard for this group to make a crappy album but this one is just so average sounding I couldn't give it a 4/5. I wanted to but nothing really jumped out at me. In saying that there wasn't a single bad track either so that's a plus. I thought the artwork on this album was the best they've had done to date. Very awesome! Two things I didn't care for though on here; 1) The two filler tracks are useless and 2) Karl bitches for two pages about how crappy internet critics are. Such a waste of time to even mention them imo. All in all this album was what I expected but I'm still waiting for the one that's better than 'In Their Darkened Shrines'.

Yawn!

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 4 July 2012 11:31 (A review of Eon)

Well I got just over the half way point and decided to finally quit this bore fest. I had actually wanted to quit reading it at the 200 page mark but I thought it might improve... I was wrong. I loved the first 100 pages in as Greg opens up a new World for the reader. It's an interesting idea too and I would have loved to have seen this idea explored better. Sadly Greg blabs on and on with how bad the cold war is getting and I don't want to spoil anything but nothing surprised me in regards to the out come of this war so that whole sub plot was a waste of time for me to read and I just kept losing interest. The characters are pretty bland too and I didn't care about a single one. Arg, I could go on but basically my mind just kept wandering while reading this.

The Giant Behemoth review

Posted : 11 years, 10 months ago on 30 June 2012 09:38 (A review of The Giant Behemoth)

The last 15 minutes of this movie are actually pretty damn awesome and if I was a 10 year old kid watching this 1959 I'm sure I would have been scared!

A Hugo Award Winner?

Posted : 11 years, 11 months ago on 30 May 2012 05:52 (A review of A Fire Upon the Deep (Zones of Thought))

I don't know what all the praise for this novel is for, and it's a Hugo Award Winner too. After 100 pages in I wanted to quit it because I felt lost at times and I didn't even know the characters either. They had no soul and I didn't even like their names. Steel? Woodcarver? Scarbutt? Come on! This book is for adults but these characters sound like they're out of Harry Potter or something. I didn't like the style of writing and at times it seemed the author was talking to himself in 3rd person while writing this novel. Sounds confusing but believe me, I had to read it twice to make sure I wasn't crazy. There were some good things about this story but they were few and far between. I had to quit after 400+ pages. I found it reads like one of those Ace Double novels from the 1960's, which were hardly ever good. I can see people liking this novel if they're fans of the Golden Age of sci-fi but I've read better from that era and far better from my era. I will not be reading the sequal.

Raiden III review

Posted : 11 years, 11 months ago on 27 May 2012 10:15 (A review of Raiden III)

I always wanted to own this game but I kept seeing it for $40, used, so I just avoided it. I finally saw it for $15 and had to buy it. It's a short game, only 7 levels, but there is some replay value. You can choose to play each level on its own, fight just the bosses, or do the regular mode. There's artwork to unlock as well and it's some pretty good material to look at too. I haven't passed this on Very Hard yet, and don't think I well, but it sure if fun to just blow the shit out of everything with a Level 8 spread gun!
