Blast Furnace review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 12 January 2012 06:58 (A review of Blast Furnace)

This album was probably the first power noise album I ever heard and it's still one of my favorite out there. There's a couple weak tracks, like Be Broken and Red Crystal, but at least they're still noisy as hell. I absolutely love Death Time and it's still my #2 favorite power noise track of all time. #1 being from another group (W.A.S.T.E.). I still wish this guy was making music because I could never get enough of him.

Tracklisting:
1) Error - 7:42
2) Blast Furnace - 3:29
3) Be Broken - 6:53
4) Flower - 5:49
5) Death Time - 8:02
6) Resolution - 8:24
7) Red Crystal - 4:57
8) Unreal - 7:12
9) Dust - 8:25
10) Itami (Two) - 4:03
11) Down Here - 4:54

The Land That Time Forgot review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 11 January 2012 11:50 (A review of The Land That Time Forgot)

Well this is the first movie with a story by Edgar Rice Burroughs that I've watched. I'm not much into his style but this one wasn't too bad. The first 30 minutes were actually pretty awesome and a couple scene's were even suspenseful. The movie kind of fell apart for me when the people reach the Island though. I'm use to seeing bad effects but some of these puppets looked pretty cheap, with rubber teeth and birds that have tons of wires holding them up and such. The movie isn't subtle at all about introducing these "monsters" either and that loses a bit of thrill for me as well. I only paid $2 for this movie and it is worth a watch for sure but overall it isn't something I'll probably watch again any time soon.

Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 2 review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 11 January 2012 08:03 (A review of Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 2)

This is one of my top 5 favorite classical discs of all time. The first track, Concerto For Cello & Orchestra No. 2 is a horrific 33 minute journey. By horrific I mean the type of music that would make the soundtrack for Psycho seem sane. Penderecki creates such wonderful depressing music and I swear if I had the lights off listening to this I'd be scared. The next track, Partita is equally as great, but for different reasons. It's a very experimental track featuring a whole load of instruments from the Harpsicord to the Electric Guitar. It's still classical music but with a twist. The final track, Stabat Mater is a choral masterpiece and one of his classics. Such haunting vocals and it's just as moving as the first piece. This was the disc that got me hooked on Krzysztof Penderecki, forever!

Gravy Train review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 10 January 2012 09:58 (A review of Gravy Train)

This was a pretty good album but there's a couple things I don't like about. I would have prefered more variation with the congas for sure. They sound like they're the same beat for each track. (1,2-3 1,2-3). It starts to dracted me away from the song after a while and the songs could have been played without the congas just as well too. I also would have liked it if Lou wrote more songs on the album. He only wrote 2 of the 7, but at least the ones he wrote are the better ones on here. Those being Gravy Train and Twist Time. The cover artwork doesn't apeal to me much either. Not a big fan of a photo of someone stuffing their face with food.

Ok, so it sounds like I don't like this album. I do like the music but I've heard better and it's still a good album to listen to but I have to be in one of those moods I guess, whatever mood that is.

Donkey Kong Country review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 10 January 2012 01:20 (A review of Donkey Kong Country)

Personally I can find absolutely nothing wrong with this game and it was the first one I ever bought for my SNES back in the day. I remember so much getting into the World this game created and I wanted to buy the soundtrack as well. Still haven't found it but I burned a couple tracks for a nerd mix. In short, this game is one of my all time favorites and I still play it... and remember where every bloody banana and secret is too... kinda sad.

Throne Is Melting review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2012 01:26 (A review of Throne Is Melting)

A great collection of previously released material. The opening track is one of the nicest 'noise' tracks I've heard in a while and features a lovely voice of a female artist I myself have not heard else where except on this disc. Track 4 is another soft melodic track with her voice and the lyrical justice she spurts out.
From track 2-3, 5-6 we have the Bastard Noise were use to. Scraping drones and clicky scratches blasted throughout each track with the hiss of death behind it. 'Red Hurricane', previously released as a 3", is my favorite on here. Not because it's a tribute to Jupiterโ€™s Red Spot, but because it is one of the best 'build-up' noise tracks out there. You sit and wait for the drone and hisses to get louder and build up speed and then the track ends the way it started and your left alone, but satisfied. If your new to Bastard Noise this is a great collection of his many talents and collaborations.

Playboys review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2012 01:24 (A review of Playboys)

Chet Baker was the hunk of jazz so it's no shock he had an album with this title. This is cool jazz at it's best and the recordings are crystal clear. I don't own anything else by either of these artists because cool jazz isn't something I go hunting for but this is one album I'd recommend for sure. Nothing is too slow and all the tracks are good. The edition I own has a nice 12 page booklet and the CD is made to look like a record. It's a good CD reissue if you can get it. The front cover is hot as well...sexy album this is!

Notes:
Tracks 1 to 7 recorded at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, November 20 & 21, 1956.
Tracks 8 to 12 recorded at the Forum Theatre, Los Angeles, July 26 & 28, 1956.
TRT: 67:20
Tracks 8 to 12 are bonus tracks.

Credits:
Bass - Curtis Counce (tracks: 1 to 7) , Leroy Vinnegar (tracks: 8 to 12)
Drums - Lawrence Marable (tracks: 1 to 7) , Stan Levey (tracks: 8 to 12)
Piano - Carl Perkins (tracks: 1 to 7) , Pete Jolly (tracks: 8 to 12)
Saxophone [Alto] - Art Pepper
Saxophone [Tenor] - Phil Ochs (tracks: 1 to 7) , Richie Kamuca (tracks: 8 to 12)
Trumpet - Chet Baker

Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2012 01:22 (A review of Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe)

I would have enjoyed this a heck of a lot more if it wasn't for the vocals. I don't really dislike the actual voice but some of the lyrics are bad. Some of the worst I've heard in jazz to be honest. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my free jazz and when vocals are mixed in I rarely like them together. I will say the the bass on this album is awesome and Island Harvest was pretty cool (kinda neat to hear actually). I've listened to a few Ayler albums and this is my least favourite for sure. Drudgery is kind of a blues track and doesn't even fit on this album at all so it makes this listen even more complicated.

Pod review

Posted : 12 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2012 01:20 (A review of Pod)

When I listen to ambient I want to be moved. I want to close my eyes and think of traveling in space. I usually associate ambient music with space for some reason and this album is nearly perfect. It was probably created with that idea, just by the band name and the title of this album. To me, it really is one of the best ambient albums I've ever heard and when I close my eyes it takes me all the way to Jupiter. One day I will make it my mission to play this in an open field, in the middle of no where, with nothing but the deep stars to blanket my thoughts. It shall be one scary trip indeed! Can't wait.
